2009 in Review

Has there ever been a boring year? 2009 was pretty interesting. I went to the Cannes Film Festival, recorded an album with Koala Fires, worked on a some new short films (Score That Date, A Wake, Drive Me to the CenterQuestionable Taste) and spent time in Dallas, New Orleans, Austin, Miami, Chicago, Paris, San Diego and L.A.

I started using this blog about halfway through the year, mostly using it to document creative projects that I’m somehow involved in. Most of the time it’s not about my life outside of making things but I thought it’d share a few personal highlights from 2009.

I take a lot of pictures—I uploaded over 2,000 to Flickr in 2009. You can see my favorites that I took this year (and one I didn’t—the portrait with Bucky was taken by Audrey Hamdan) in this 2009 favorites set on Flickr.

I watched 115 movies in 2009. Here’s a breakdown:

watched in theater – 50
DVD – 36
Blu-ray – 22
HD DVR – 4
Netflix streaming – 2
iTunes rental – 1

Some of my favorite 2009 releases (in the order that I saw them):

Adventureland
The Brothers Bloom
(500) Days of Summer
Inglorious Basterds
A Serious Man
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Anvil! The Story of Anvil
Up in the Air
An Education
The Hurt Locker

Plus a few favorites that were older films I saw for the first time:

You Can Count on Me (2000)
Safe Men (1998)
Paper Moon (1973)
Shoot the Moon (1982)
12 Angry Men (1957)

I wrote about my favorite albums of 2009 in a previous post you can read here: My Favorite Albums of 2009

I think that’s enough. Thanks to everyone who’s inspired, supported and collaborated with me over the past year—nothing I’ve done could have happened without lots of help. I’m looking forward to working on all kinds of different and new interesting projects in 2010!

  1. Thank God someone besides me had an awesome year, how tedius its been listening to everyone bitch and moan about how much the last year and decade sucked.
We’re expecting big things from you next year too.

  2. Your older film section has a theme of “moon” and “men”. I’m trying to figure out what this teaches me about you. Also, who made the plush heart? I love it. And I love the third photo in of the dilapidated building. Happy new year!

    1. I guess I’m inspired by Moon Men. I also just realized that three of those older movies were recommended by Vanessa—maybe I should listen to her more.

Corrie Loeffler made the plush heart from my design/pattern.

  3. Nina The Pug!! She made it into someone else’s favorites besides mine…
I think you should cast her in a short film.

Cheers to an even better year than the last!
