2012 Chicago Sketchfest: Sat 1/14 Picks

January 14, 2012

The 2012 Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival (AKA Sketchfest) offers plenty of comedy tonight with 24 groups performing on four stages (The Thrust, The Pro, The Box, The Cab) at Stage 773.

Many of the groups performing tonight also performed last night or last weekend.

For tonight’s 9pm slot I’m picking Heavy Wait featuring T.J. Miller (Late Night with David Letterman, Comedy Central), Brady Novak (Community, Raising Hope), Mark Raterman (Second City) and Nick Vatterott (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan) but last night I saw Pangea 3000 and they were one of my absolute favorites this year so I also highly recommend seeing them tonight if you missed them yesterday.

Other second chance performances I recommend include The Tim and Micah Project, The Cupid Players, Urlakis and Cusick, Stupid Time Machine and Fuct.

These are my picks for tonight.

2012 Chicago Sketchfest: Fri 1/6 Picks

January 6, 2012

The 2012 Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival (AKA Sketchfest) continues tonight with sixteen groups performing on four stages (The Thrust, The Pro, The Box, The Cab) at Stage 773.

If last night was any indication this Sketchfest will be as packed as ever before. Prepare for crowds and occasionally spilling out onto the sidewalk for some fresh air. At least it’s not crazy cold this year.

These are my picks for tonight.

January 5, 2012

The 2012 Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival (AKA Sketchfest) begins tonight with twelve groups performing on four stages (The Thrust, The Pro, The Box, The Cab) at Stage 773.

There are 76 performances this weekend so there are many choices and it can be a little overwhelming but I’ve done my homework and can help. Here are my picks for each time slot tonight:

Let’s Get Serious with Teenager of the Year

March 17, 2011

I finally got around to interviewing one of my favorite groups from this year’s Chicago Sketch Fest, Teenager of the Year.

Teenager of the Year is Joe Avella and Tim Racine. We discuss what it means to be “Too Hot for Sketchfest”, Frank Black, yellow journalism, hating easy humor, Jock Jams and the Chicago sketch comedy scene. Plus, we talk about what we’re not going to talk about.

Let’s Get Serious with Elephant Larry

January 11, 2011

Stefan Lawrence and Alexander Zalben are 2/5ths of Elephant Larry, one of New York’s most notorious sketch comedy groups. They sat down with me prior to their second performance at the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival and we talked about the Kowalski Method, using your babies as stage props and what it means to have one of your videos viewed online over 10 million times. If I had seen their show before the interview I would have asked them lots of questions about making horseradish.
