Let’s Get Serious with Steve Mazan

June 29, 2011

Steve Mazan of Dying to Do LettermanDying to Do Letterman is a feature-length documentary that chronicles comedian Steve Mazan’s quest to perform stand-up on Late Show with David Letterman after being diagnosed with cancer in 2005.

The film screened on June 17 as part of the TBS Just for Laughs Chicago comedy festival and will be screening again this Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Gene Siskel Film Center at 8:15pm.

I sat down with Mazan for a long conversation about the quality of light in San Francisco, mid-western senses of humor and not giving up on your dreams regardless of the odds.

TBS Just for Laughs 2011: Wednesday Picks

June 15, 2011

If last night’s sold out Chicago Underground Comedy show that kicked off the festival is any indication, you need to buy your tickets in advance and show up early. A full, appreciative crowd was treated to some some of the best local and not-so-local-anymore stand-up comedy.

Also, expect the unexpected—last night Nick Vatterott performed a surprise set to close out the night (or at least until a band started).

Here are my picks for Wednesday night.

TBS Just for Laughs 2011: Tuesday Picks

June 14, 2011

TBS Just for Laughs Chicago officially kicks off tonight with three events featuring a film, local stand-up and musical weirdness.

The Gene Siskel Film Center is presenting Losing Control at 7:45pm. Losing Control is described as “a quirky romantic comedy about a female scientist who wants proof that her boyfriend is the one.” According to the Siskel’s website, executive producer Jeffrey Loeb, and tentatively, actress Kathleen Robertson will be present for discussion.

TBS Just for Laughs Chicago 2011

June 12, 2011

TWIX Presents TBS Just for Laughs Chicago is invading our city of big shoulders June 14-19, 2011 and I will be providing coverage with some Let’s Get Serious podcasts and blog posts.

The festival features some super well-known comedians—Louis CK, Steve Martin, Demetri Martin (no relation… that we know of), Joel McHale, Dave Attell and George Lopez—but it also features up-and-comers, lesser-knowns and locals performing more shows than you could possibly attend in six days, including a film series at the Gene Siskel Film Center.
